Rhizobium is a beneficial soil bacterium that forms a symbiotic relationship with leguminous plants . It colonizes the root nodules of these plants and fixes atmospheric nitrogen into a usable form (ammonia) for the plant. This natural nitrogen fixation reduces the plant’s need for synthetic nitrogen fertilizers.

राइजोबियम एक लाभकारी बैक्टीरिया है जो दलहनी फसलों (जैसे सोयाबीन, चना, मसूर, मटर आदि) की जड़ों में मौजूद गाठों (नोड्यूल्स) में रहता है। यह बैक्टीरिया वातावरण की नाइट्रोजन को पकड़कर उसे अमोनिया में बदलता है, जो पौधों द्वारा सीधे उपयोग की जा सकती है। इसे जैविक नाइट्रोजन स्थिरीकरण (Biological Nitrogen Fixation) कहा जाता है।
